Slugging: New Tiktok Skincare Trend

The slugging trend came to us from Korea, how else than through TikTok. It’s a skincare trick that should help you get juicy hydrated skin. What exactly is it and what benefits can it bring you?

Slugging basically means that you use Vaseline as part of your skincare routine. Yes, you read that right. Supposedly, Vaseline (which btw costs about 2€ at the drugstore) is supposed to give you smooth and hydrated skin. 💦

How does it work?

A thin layer of petroleum jelly prevents water loss from the skin. It creates a “sluggy” layer on your skin (hence the slugging 🐌) and this acts as a barrier through which nothing leaves your skin. That way all the moisture stays there and your skin doesn’t lose hydration.

Plus, Vaseline is supposed to restore the skin, smoothen it out and deal with breakouts and redness too. Now you’re probably wondering if that oily stuff is clogging your pores, but imagine not! Vaseline molecules are too big to get into the pores at all.

Who is slugging recommended for?

The great thing is that slugging can be suitable for almost any skin type. For dry skin the benefits are logical, but oily skin can benefit too! After all, it needs proper hydration too, even though you may think an oily product won’t help. The only thing to watch out for is acne-prone skin. There, the petroleum jelly layer could be a problem as it would prevent the skin from breathing and cleansing.

Application

Vaseline should be applied as the last step in your skincare routine, and it’s up to you whether it’s in the morning or at night. For me, the evening is probably better because I don’t know what it would be like to walk around all day like a greaseball. Only put a thin layer on your skin, the barrier does help to hydrate but at the same time, our skin is unable to breathe with it. So everything in moderation.

The skincare process is very individual for all of us, so it’s possible that slugging doesn’t suit you or that you’re just not comfortable with it 🤍.

What do you think? I think it’s an interesting trick and probably the cheapest way to achieve a nice looking skin.
